Opening a Barclays International Bank account is straightforward and you'll have a choice of three major currencies – sterling, euros, or US dollars.
The best bank for international banking depends on your financial needs. Our top picks are J.P. Morgan, Bank of America, Citibank, HSBC, and Standard Chartered.
Our company is a leading global financial services firm with assets of $2.6 trillion and operations worldwide. Our rich history spans over 200 years. We are a leader in investment banking, financial services for consumers and small business, commercial banking, financial transactions processing and asset management.
JPMorgan Chase Bank
Chase Bank, the consumer banking arm of JPMorgan Chase, has more than 4,700 US branches, over 15,000 domestic ATMs and a slew of international banking branches. Chase Bank serves customers in more than 60 countries with offices in the Americas, Europe, North Africa and Asia.
Wells Fargo serves middle-market and large corporations with a full range of international financial services through offices across the U.S. and throughout the world. Our extensive international coverage provides you with the global expertise and the on-the-ground support needed to help manage your global business.
You can apply if you're at least 18 years old and have a valid reason for opening an account overseas. Other criteria apply depending on where you want to open an account.
Moving money across the world isn't a hassle with our international banking services. You can transfer funds to Citibank accounts in over 20 different countries in seconds and free of charge. Plus we make it quick and easy to move money to accounts across the world, within or outside the Citibank network.
Whether you're an expatriate, a globe-trotting professional, or someone who has made the leap to live abroad, managing your money across countries is a necessity. International bank accounts are designed to ease this process, offering a financial bridge between your home country and your new surroundings.
You benefit more by keeping your money in an international bank account. Companies also take advantage of the flexibility offered by international bank accounts. You can withdraw any amount and at any time of the day or night. You also have the option to withdraw online, from ATMs or phones.
Can I use Bank of America International?
A Bank of America International Transaction Fee of 3% will apply when converting your currency. 8 • If you have any issues with your cards while traveling, please call the number on the back of your card. Please visit locators.bankofamerica.com/international.html for a complete and current listing before you travel.
The company serves clients through operations across the United States, its territories and more than 35 countries. Bank of America Corporation stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: BAC).
We have a local presence at a global scale, with offices in Africa, the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe and the Middle East.
We don't charge fees when you use your card abroad and we'll apply the current Mastercard exchange rate to any purchases you make in the local currency. Local banks may charge their own fees when you use one of their cash machines and you should make sure you understand what these are before making a withdrawal.
If a business accepts credit cards, your Visa or Mastercard will likely work fine. The other two — American Express and Discover — do have a global footprint, but they are accepted at fewer merchants. If you have one of these cards, be sure to confirm you can use it on your trip.
In commercial banking, Bank of America operates—but does not necessarily maintain—retail branches in all 50 states of the United States, the District of Columbia and more than 40 other countries.
Chase Bank (JP Morgan)
Chase Bank operates in more than 100 countries around the world, including the U.S., the U.K., Germany, Italy, Singapore, Japan, and China. It has 4,700 branches and 17,000 ATMs, providing coverage similar to that of Bank of America.
All Wells Fargo cards should work internationally wherever the card's network is accepted – however, there's often a 3% foreign transaction fee, plus ATM withdrawal costs if you're overseas.
And, while it is absolutely legal to own a foreign bank account, there are some additional reporting and tax requirements that US persons should be aware of so that they can remain in IRS tax and reporting compliance and avoid unnecessary fines and penalties.
You can choose to open your international bank account online by visiting your bank's website and submitting the application form with the Know Your Customer (KYC) documents.
What is the easiest foreign bank account to open?
Belize – Best choice for low deposit and remote opening
Generally, Belize is where you can set up a bank account with ease. Another reason behind its popularity is the financial stability level. All banks in Belize are legally required to have at least a 24% liquidity ratio.
Citibank does offer international services through its International Personal Bank¹ division. Here you can open a selection of checking accounts, including accounts with linked debit cards, savings accounts and Certificates of Deposit.
What You Get. This service lets you send money from your Citibank checking or Savings 1account to accounts at other financial institutions in the US and internationally.
Discover® Bank
With an HSBC Premier Checking account, customers pay no foreign transaction fees. HSBC also has a worldwide network of ATMs.
