What neighborhood was Goodfellas filmed in?
While a subtitle establishes the location as Brooklyn's East New York neighborhood, it's actually Astoria, Queens.
Movie “Goodfellas” filmed in 1990 at Jackson Hole Airline Diner in Astoria.
The two later got married in a large North Carolina wedding, attended by most of Henry Hill's gangster friends. Henry Hill wrote in his 1994 book Gangsters and Goodfellas that Tommy DeSimone tried to rape Karen while Hill was in jail. Karen was meanwhile having an affair with Vario.
Neir's Tavern is a bar located at 87-48 78th Street in the Woodhaven neighborhood of Queens, New York City. It is one of the oldest bars in the United States, having been in nearly continuous operation since 1829.
Scenes from New York: “How am I funny?” Movie: Goodfellas Director: Martin Scorsese Location: In real life, The Bamboo Lounge was located at the southwest corner of Avenue Y and Coney Island Ave. There's a Nissan dealership where the lounge once stood.
▶ The 'Brooklyn' home of young Henry (Christopher Serrone), where he enviously watches the sharp-suited wiseguys from his bedroom window, is 24-09 32nd Street, just south of 24th Avenue, Astoria, in Queens.
Goodfellas film
Hill was portrayed by Ray Liotta. Scorsese initially named the film Wise Guy but subsequently, with Pileggi's agreement, changed the name to Goodfellas to avoid confusion with the unrelated television crime drama Wiseguy. Two weeks in advance of the filming, Hill was paid $480,000.
The first scene of Henry's adult life was shot in the parking lot of the Airline Diner. Henry and Tommy (played by Joe Pesci) steal a tractor-trailer from an unsuspecting victim who just happens to leave the truck running with the keys inside. The diner is real, but it's located in Astoria, near LaGuardia Airport.
Henry explains how it all goes down. Basically, Paulie can do whatever he wants with the Bamboo Lounge: run up huge tabs, move merchandise through it, eat all of the maraschino cherries, the works. Then, when Sonny can't pay Paulie anymore, they burn the joint down. That's exactly what we see happen.
The wedding is a celebration of Italian American spirit, style, and success. Scorsese's love for his people—his attentiveness to and understanding of them—can be felt through the screen. Yet he also makes sure the spectacle does not proceed without rebuke.
What was Jimmy trying to do to Karen in Goodfellas?
Jimmy was also likely afraid that Henry, who'd gone to jail for his ongoing drug operation, would sell him out as being a part of the operation. Murdering Karen and Henry would ensure the Feds would never find out about his part in the whole affair.
For Martin Scorsese and Nicholas Pileggi's part, a lot of Jimmy Conway was taken wholesale from James Burke's real life, largely because the film was an adaptation of Pileggi's nonfiction book Wiseguy. The book details the life of Henry Hill.
A scene from Martin Scorsese's film Goodfellas (1990) was shot at Catalina Beach Club.
This is the scene where the pair steal a truck full of cargo, and it turns out that the diner is a real one. Called Jackson Hole Diner, it is situated at 69-35 Astoria Boulevard in Queens, New York. By all accounts, it's pretty good too.
The real Frankie Carbone from Goodfellas, Angelo Sepe. Angelo John Sepe a.k.a. "Angie" (January 14, 1941 South Ozone Park, Queens – July 18, 1984 New Utrecht, Brooklyn) was an Italian gangster in the Lucchese crime family.
Like many other characters in Goodfellas, Spider is based on a real-life person, and according to the real Henry Hill, his death in the movie happened just as it did in real-life. Spider's real name was Michael Gianco, and he became associated with the Lucchese family sometime in the 1960s.
Frank Sivero (born January 6, 1952) is an American character actor, perhaps best known for playing the roles of Genco Abbandando in Mario Puzo's and Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather Part II and Frankie Carbone (based on Angelo Sepe) in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas.

Luckily for the crew behind Goodfellas, real gangsters reacted quite well to it, with Pileggi telling GQ in 2010 that they love it “because it's the real thing” and they knew the people featured in it, so it felt “like a home movie”.
The names of several real-life gangsters were altered for the film: Tommy "Two Gun" DeSimone became the character Tommy DeVito; Paul Vario became Paulie Cicero, and Jimmy "The Gent" Burke was portrayed as Jimmy Conway.
Is Lucchese family still active?
The Lucchese crime family continues to operate today in New York City, with involvement in traditional rackets such as illegal gambling, labor racketeering and extortion.
Easily the most iconic shot in Goodfellas is the meticulously choreographed Copacabana tracking shot. This might be the most memorable oner in film history. On top of the impressive technical achievement, this shot does a great job of showing how Karen is seduced by the criminal lifestyle.
The Copacabana tracking shot
There's no question that the most iconic moment in Goodfellas is the long tracking shot that follows Henry as he takes Karen to the Copacabana nightclub. They arrive at the club and there's a long line of customers coming out of the door.
Frankie Carbone is based on Angelo Sepe, a member of the Lucchese family and close friend of Tommy, Jimmy, and Tony Rodriguez, and who was reportedly killed a week after robbing a Lucchese-affiliated drug trafficker of thousands of dollars in cocaine and cash earmarked for the organization.
Unfortunately, Carbone was one of the many crew members that were killed by Jimmy in an effort to cover their tracks, and he was found frozen in a meat truck.
Sivero's Frankie Carbone was found dead, frozen in a meat locker, after the Lufthansa heist.
The diner's co-owner Dinise Diamintis told the NY Post that they'll try to reopen the diner as soon as possible, but at the time she was also seemingly in shock as to the extent of the damage.
Karen becomes scared when she sees two shady-looking workers. Jimmy's message to Karen and Henry is clear: they can be ignominiously eliminated if they talk about their connections. Convinced that he and his family are marked for death, Henry decides to become an informant for the FBI.
Goodfellas is built around the simple idea that Henry Hill is a fundamentally unreliable narrator and that the audience should not take him at his word. This is his side of the story, but it is not entirely convincing as an objective statement of the facts.
While Goodfellas has a real place in history, being based on a true story, The Godfather has a better hold on its historical context. It's about fictional characters, but it's rooted in very real history. It takes place between 1945 and 1955, and this post-war setting forms a lot of the plot.
Why did Henry snitch on Jimmy?
In order to avoid going to jail or being killed by Jimmy Conway and others, Henry tells the FBI everything they need to know about Jimmy (aka James Burke) and Paul Cicero (Paul Sorvino). His testimonies are enough to have both men arrested and convicted.
Based on what's shown in Goodfellas, Henry didn't really have reasons to betray Tommy, which makes it unlikely that he would have told the Gambino family he was the one behind the murder of Billy Batts, but in real life, Henry definitely had reasons.
Paulie angrily berates Henry for going against his back with drugs, but relents in giving him $3,200 for his family's sake. Paulie then disowns Henry by telling him "Now I gotta turn my back on you", to which Henry shamefully accepts.
Although the Tommy Goodfellas character's death — both in the movie and in real life — continues to be surrounded by mystery, it's speculated that he was killed in retaliation for the murder of Billy Batts.
Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas is based on a true story and on real-life gangsters, but it made some big changes to the stories of these characters, among them Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), whose real name was Tommy DeSimone.
Paul Sorvino as the mob underboss who gave orders with just a nod of his head in “Goodfellas.”Warner Bros. When Paul Sorvino was offered the role of Paulie Cicero, the Queens-based mob underboss in Martin Scorsese's “Goodfellas” (1990), he very much did not want to accept it.
So who made the shirts for Goodfellas? The spear point collars or Capo Collars are about four inches long and they come down so far. Some of them are so sharp, some of them are rounded. They were all made custom for the movie by Geneva Custom Shirts in New York.
When Walter and the Dude debate whether or not the infamous toe indeed belongs to Bunny, they do so over coffee at Johnies Coffee Shop and Restaurant, located at 610 Wilshire Boulevard in midtown.
Darrow played restaurant owner Sonny Bunz in "Goodfellas."
Hollywood Star Lanes was a 32-lane bowling alley located on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. Open from 1960 to 2002, the alley was featured in the film The Big Lebowski, which was filmed on location over three weeks of the eleven-week filming schedule. It was also a filming location for The Big Empty.
Where is the mansion from Big Lebowski?
The Lebowski mansion interior is one of LA's most iconic buildings and film locations: the Greystone Mansion, aka the Doheny Mansion (905 Loma Vista Dr., Beverly Hills).
In N' Out Burger is an actual fast food burger chain found in most cities in California thatthe Dude, Walter, and Donny order after confronting Larry Sellers at his house.
The names of several real-life gangsters were altered for the film: Tommy "Two Gun" DeSimone became the character Tommy DeVito; Paul Vario became Paulie Cicero, and Jimmy "The Gent" Burke was portrayed as Jimmy Conway.
