Where was the drunk driving scene in North by Northwest filmed?
The car chase scene in which Thornhill is drunkenly careening along the edge of cliffs high above the ocean, supposedly on Long Island, was actually shot on the California coast. However the Townsend estate is actually a Long Island Gold Coast mansion that is now the Old Westbury Gardens.
With the exception of the crop duster sequence, location filming was shot chronologically: New York City, then Chicago and finally Rapid City, South Dakota where some of the Mount Rushmore daytime scenes were filmed.
The drama culminates at Mount Rushmore, with Kendall and Thornhill scrambling about the presidential faces to elude enemy agents.
Apart from the initial establishing shots and footage in the car park, which were shot on location at the historic monument in South Dakota, the rest of the Rushmore scene was filmed on an MGM soundstage.
Their first glimpse of the coast, and where the Man takes brutal revenge on a robber, is Fort Stevens State Park, Hammond, near Astoria, Oregon, with the skeletal wreck of the Peter Iredale rising from the sands.
The house was built entirely on the MGM stages in Culver City. The interiors were built as full-scale movie sets. Some of the exteriors were also build on stage – the previously-mentioned beams, the balcony from which Roger sees Eve, etc.
The only authentic shots of Mt. Rushmore in North by Northwest (1959) are the ones looking at the monument from a distance. The shooting and subsequent ambulance scenes were filmed in the actual monument cafeteria and surrounding grounds, but nothing that required accessing the monument itself was on-location.

Eschewing the slow-burn suspense and hushed atmosphere of Hitchco*ck's earlier spy thrillers like The 39 Steps (1935) and Saboteur (1942), North by Northwest pioneered a new breed of action cinema rooted in larger-than-life adventure and momentous setpieces.
By the time she worked with Hitchco*ck on North by Northwest, she was 35 and had just given birth to her second child.
In North by Northwest, the MacGuffin is reduced to what Hitchco*ck called “its purest expression: nothing at all!” The information sought by both Thornhill and the government is stored on microfilm contained within a figurine. But the secrets on that microfilm, thus the gravity of the stakes, are never revealed.
