Where is The Last of Us currently filming?
Shot entirely in Alberta and starring Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, Narcos) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones, Becoming Elizabeth), the first season of the show was filmed between July 2021 and June 2022. The series is the largest film production in Alberta's history, and one of the biggest in Canada.
The Last of Us, HBO's lauded drama based on the videogame of the same name, will film season 2 in Vancouver, Canada. Season one began filming in July 2023 in Calgary, Alberta.
Mazin and Druckmann are currently working in pre-production for The Last of Us season 2. It is unclear when they will begin filming. Pascal told Collider in February "there is a chance" they will begin filming before the end of 2023.
And all the urban scenes are shot in the cities of Calgary, Edmonton, and the smaller suburbs of Fort MacLeod, Canmore, Bragg Creek, and Waterton Park.
We used an actual mall, the Northland Village Mall, that was about to be torn down. It was completely gutted, including the store fronts, so we built everything.
Before shifting the plot to a post-apocalyptic Boston, the show's initial scenes are set in Austin.
According to Drunkmann, one of the reasons Naughty Dog picked Seattle was because of its various locations. The developer knew that it was going to have Ellie spend a lot of time in one city, so it picked one that allowed it to switch up the art styles and locations.
“The Last of Us is one of the biggest productions ever filmed in Canada and one of the largest shows on television today. The choice to move filming to Vancouver is a demonstration of our city's continued strength in the film and television sector.”
Season 1 was shot in Alberta, Canada, which stood in for various locations in the US, and resulted in some city-based changes based on what they had to work with. But now Season 2 is leaving the province and heading to Vancouver, British Columbia instead.
The show was shot exclusively in Alberta starting in 2021 and used an astonishing 180 locations around the province, from Grande Prairie all the way down to Waterton Lakes National Park.
Does The Last of Us take place in Seattle?
We don't know much about Season 2's storyline yet (or when production will begin), but we do know that much of The Last of Us: Part II takes place in Seattle and the Northwest, with many familiar sites to be discovered and explored.
While it features a number of notable American cities like Boston, Kansas City, Salt Lake City, and more, the entire series was actually shot in Alberta, and is one of the biggest productions in Canada's history!
The penultimate episode of HBO's The Last Of Ushas just aired and once again, there were a ton of brand new locations in Alberta used as filming locations. Episode eight, called "When We Are In Need," was mostly filmed in the idyllic mountain town of Waterton however, it definitely wasn't quite as dreamy in the show.
