The musical adaptation called for a versatile young actress who was also an accomplished singer. Although a number of established stars coveted the part, Lerner, Loewe and director Moss Hart decided to take a chance on the 20-year-old Julie Andrews, who had never before acted in such a demanding role.
She was dubbed (for singing) by Margery McKay. In her autobiography, Marni Nixon, who appeared in the film as Sister Sophia, said Peggy especially liked McKay's singing voice because she sounded as Peggy did in her younger days.
During this time, Georg fell in love with Maria and asked her to stay with him and become a second mother to his children. Of his proposal, Maria said, "God must have made him word it that way because if he had only asked me to marry him I might not have said yes." Maria Kutschera and Georg von Trapp married in 1927.
Captain von Trapp saw how much she cared about his children and asked her to marry him, although he was 25 years her senior. She was frightened and fled back to Nonnberg Abbey to seek guidance from the mother abbess, Virgilia Lütz, who advised her that it was God's will that she should marry him.

While the veteran actor sang the songs on camera, his vocals were later dubbed over by well-known playback singer Bill Lee for the 1965 film and corresponding soundtrack.
Plummer received vocal training for the part of Capt Von Trapp in the Oscar-winning 1965 movie but a singer, Bill Lee, was dubbed in for the famous Rodgers and Hammerstein numbers. Almost six decades on, an expanded, remixed and remastered version of The Sound of Music soundtrack is to be released.
