What percentage of Americans have enough money saved to cover a $1000 emergency?
The majority (56 percent) of U.S. adults wouldn't pay for an emergency expense of $1,000 or more, such as an emergency room visit or unexpected car repair, from their savings account. The percentage of people who would pay from their savings has barely changed over the past three years: 2024: 44 percent.
Nearly one in four (22%) of U.S. adults have no emergency savings at all, Bankrate found—the second-lowest percentage in 13 years of polling. That's especially bad news given that most Americans would need at least six months of emergency savings to feel comfortable day-to-day.
About 29% of respondents have between $501 and $5,000 in their savings accounts, while the remaining 21% of Americans have $5,001 or more. Few hold much cash in their checking accounts as well. Of those surveyed, 60% report having $500 or less in their checking accounts, while only about 12% have $2,001 or more.
The GBR study revealed that half don't have any emergency savings at all. Those who do are most likely to have $1,000 or less, which isn't nearly enough to get the typical household through a single month — or possibly even a single vehicle breakdown or home repair. Another 11% have between $1,000 and $3,000.
The numbers are consistently around 60%, meaning only 40% of Americans have enough savings to cover an unexpected expense without going into debt. As of January 2023, the report shows that 57% of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings.
Fewer than half of Americans, 44%, say they can afford to pay a $1,000 emergency expense from their savings, according to Bankrate's survey of more than 1,000 respondents conducted in December. That is up from 43% in 2023, yet level when compared to 2022.
More than half of Americans wouldn't pay for a sudden $1,000 bill from their emergency savings. The majority (56 percent) of U.S. adults wouldn't pay for an emergency expense of $1,000 or more, such as an emergency room visit or unexpected car repair, from their savings account.
Just 45% of all Americans have $1,000 or more in savings.

Is $1,000 a good emergency fund?
Experts recommend keeping at least three months expenses in a reliable, liquid account – though even an extra $1,000 can be a life-saver. But finding $1,000 to save isn't always easy. That's why we've put together this 4-step plan on how to save $1,000 in 10 months.
None of this means that 37% of US households cannot handle a $400 emergency expense — or that it would cause them to file for bankruptcy. The survey asks the cash-poor 37% what they would do if they needed the money. Only 13% of all households said they could not come up with $400 at all.
Only one in three Americans can comfortably cover a $400 emergency expense, according to new survey data from Suze Orman's emergency savings startup as the personal finance expert warns of broadening financial insecurity.
Around 23% of Americans are debt free, according to the most recent data available from the Federal Reserve. That figure factors in every type of debt, from credit card balances and student loans to mortgages, car loans and more. The exact definition of debt free can vary, though, depending on whom you ask.
A new GOBankingRates survey found that most Americans have $1,000 or less in personal savings in 2023; a third have $500 or less saved, while 8.5% have between $501 and $1,000. Meanwhile a whopping 11.4% said they have no savings, the survey found.
Savings account balance | Percentage of respondents |
---|---|
$1,001 to $5,000 | 22% |
$5,001 to $10,000 | 8% |
$10,000 to $20,000 | 7% |
Over $20,000 | 14% |
According to the Federal Reserve's most recent Survey of Consumer Finances, the median savings account balance for all families was $8,000 in 2022. Savings account balances can vary greatly depending on income, age, education and race.
American households, on average, have $41,600 in savings, according to data last collected by the Federal Reserve in 2019. The median balance for American households is $5,300, according to the same data. The reality is that the above stats may not accurately reflect the financial situation of many Americans.
The median account balance in 2019 was around $5,300, while the average account balance is around $41,600. This is the latest available data, as the Federal Reserve releases this survey every three years. The Fed plans to publish its 2022 survey data later this year.
Nearly 2 in 3 Americans (65%) had to put off a major financial milestone in 2023, with 28% of Americans putting off taking a vacation, 21% putting off buying a car or paying off credit card debt, 18% putting off starting an emergency fund and 17% put off contributing to their retirement savings.
How many people can t afford a $500 emergency?
Many or all of the products here are from our partners that compensate us. It's how we make money. But our editorial integrity ensures our experts' opinions aren't influenced by compensation.
Bottom Line. Living on $1,000 per month is a challenge. From the high costs of housing, transportation and food, plus trying to keep your bills to a minimum, it would be difficult for anyone living alone to make this work. But with some creativity, roommates and strategy, you might be able to pull it off.
The personal savings rate (personal savings as a percentage of disposable personal income) was 4.1%. Excluding retirement assets, the average American has $65,100 in personal savings, according to a 2023 Financial Planning & Progress study from Northwestern Mutual.
14% of Americans Have $100,000 Saved for Retirement
Most Americans are not saving enough for retirement. According to the survey, only 14% of Americans have $100,000 or more saved in their retirement accounts. In fact, about 78% of Americans have $50,000 or less saved for retirement.
Most American households have at least $1,000 in checking or savings accounts. But only about 12% have more than $100,000 in checking and savings.
