How much money does the average American have in their bank account?
The average American has about 183,000 dollars in savings and retirement accounts; most of the money is in retirement accounts. The median amount of savings, which is probably a more realistic number, is about 13,000 dollars.
The median account balance in 2019 was around $5,300, while the average account balance is around $41,600. This is the latest available data, as the Federal Reserve releases this survey every three years.
Aim for about one to two months' worth of living expenses in checking, plus a 30% buffer, and another three to six months' worth in savings.
For savings, aim to keep three to six months' worth of expenses in a high-yield savings account, but note that any amount can be beneficial in a financial emergency. For checking, an ideal amount is generally one to two months' worth of living expenses plus a 30% buffer.
Most American households have at least $1,000 in checking or savings accounts. But only about 12% have more than $100,000 in checking and savings.
Also, nearly one in four (22 percent) U.S. adults said they have no emergency savings. Despite economic challenges, the percentage remains relatively unchanged year-over-year. In 2022, 23 percent of Americans had no emergency savings.
Percentile of Income | Average Bank Account Balance |
---|---|
90% to 100% | $111,600 |
80% to 89% | $33,800 |
60% to 79% | $15,760 |
40% to 59% | $7,400 |
Most Americans are not saving enough for retirement. According to the survey, only 14% of Americans have $100,000 or more saved in their retirement accounts. In fact, about 78% of Americans have $50,000 or less saved for retirement.
For an interest-only retirement, you'll need to have a large nest egg. How big a nest egg depends on your target income and the interest rate. For example, an annual income of $48,000 would require a nest egg of $1.6 million, assuming a 3% interest rate.
When your savings reaches $100,000, that's a milestone worth marking. In a world where 57% of Americans can't cover an unexpected $1,000 expense, having a six-figure savings account is commendable.
How much does the average middle class person have in savings?
In terms of savings accounts specifically, you'll likely find different estimates from different sources. The average American has $65,100 in savings — excluding retirement assets — according to Northwestern Mutual's 2023 Planning & Progress Study. That's a 5% increase over the $62,000 reported in 2022.
Banks report individuals who deposit $10,000 or more in cash. The IRS typically shares suspicious deposit or withdrawal activity with local and state authorities, Castaneda says.

In other words, more than three-quarters of Americans struggle to save or invest after paying for their monthly expenses.
Retiring with little to no money saved is not impossible, but it can present some challenges to your financial plan. Depending on where you're starting from, you may need to delay Social Security benefits, work longer, or drastically reduce expenses to retire with no money saved.

What Does Living Paycheck To Paycheck Mean? Living paycheck to paycheck means you spend all your income on your monthly living expenses – like your rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries and transportation – and have little to no money left over.
A November 2023 Bankrate survey of 2,350 U.S adults finds that 49 percent of cardholders carried credit card debt from month to month, up from 39 percent in 2021.
Nearly half of Americans will start 2024 in the red
Of those who expect to have credit card debt, 74% expect to have $1,000 or more in debt, 42% expect to have $5,000 or more in debt and a quarter (25%) expect to have $10,000 or more in debt.
How much does the average 70-year-old have in savings? We were curious, too, so we asked. Our 2023 Planning & Progress study found that the average amount of retirement savings for 70-year-olds in the U.S. is $113,900.
What salary is upper middle class?
Middle class: Those in the 40th to 60th percentile of household income, ranging from $55,001 to $89,744. Upper middle class: Households in the 60th to 80th percentile, with incomes between $89,745 and $149,131. Upper class: The top 20% of earners, with household incomes of $149,132 or more.
We can also define middle class in terms of net worth. According to the U.S. Census data, the average net worth for U.S. households in 2022 is about $300,000. The median net worth is about $110,000 in 2024. In other words, wealth is concentrated at the top.
How to retire at 60 without running out of money? If you want to retire at 60 with the guarantee of never running out of money, you need to purchase an annuity. An annuity provides you with a guaranteed income for life. It's the only way you can be certain that the income will continue forever.
You can still live a fulfilling life as a retiree with little to no savings. It just may look different than you originally planned. With a little pre-planning, relying on Social Security income and making lifestyle modifications—you may be able to meet your retirement needs.
The bottom line
$100,000 is not the ideal figure to aim for as a retirement savings amount, especially if you have the time and ability to save more. But it's also not impossible to make that much money work, provided you're willing to be flexible.
