Do you have to have a bank account?
Bottom line. If you don't have a bank account, you could be paying unnecessary fees to pay your bills or otherwise manage your finances. Not only that, you may be missing out on some of the convenience and consumer protections that banks offer.
“I would argue that it is too expensive to be unbanked.” If you don't have a bank account, McClary says you're most likely to pay high fees for a prepaid card or a check cashing service. “Not only will you pay more, but your money will not be as safe due to a lack of FDIC protection,” he says.
You would face a penalty from the bank
When your Savings Account is inactive, there is a high chance that you won't be able to maintain the minimum balance requirements. If you do not have enough funds, your balance will gradually deplete over time. This will make you lose out on the Savings Account interest rate.
Yes. Otherwise it is difficult to pay bills without a bank account. You essentially have to get a mail order since you cannot mail cash. In the US you are not legally required to have a bank account, but for practical purposes, it is usually a necessity.
Some reasons a person might not have a bank account include: Lack of access via a nearby bank branch or mobile phone. Minimum balance fees. Distrust of the banking system, typically due to lack of transparency regarding fees and deposit timing.
Fees are often high to cash checks or transfer money without a bank account." Expensive check cashing is just the start -- borrowing without a bank account is where the real pain begins. "Services like payday loans may provide access to needed funds in the short run but at the cost of higher interest fees," White said.
An estimated 4.5 percent of U.S. households (approximately 5.9 million) were “unbanked” in 2021, meaning that no one in the household had a checking or savings account at a bank or credit union.
You can get a credit card with no bank account. Paying your credit card bills may be challenging without a bank account, however. If the credit card is issued by a bank, you may be able to pay in person at a local branch. You could also mail a money order or use a money service like Western Union.
There is no law that requires banks to make change. In fact, laws to guard against money laundering prohibit banks from making change for any old amount.
Being unbanked in America
The FDIC calls people without a bank account “the unbanked.” People with a bank account but who primarily rely on alternative services such as check cashing outlets are called “the underbanked.” The latest FDIC data shows almost six million unbanked and 19 million underbanked U.S. households.
How many adults do not have a bank account?
Six percent of adults were "unbanked" in 2022, meaning neither they nor their spouse or partner had a checking, savings, or money market account. This share was unchanged from 2021. Unbanked rates were particularly high among adults with low income.
The reasons could include: Having no credit history or a poor one: your credit rating is usually checked when you apply for a current account. Supplying insufficient ID: if the account provider can't verify who you are, they won't give you an account.
The IRS probably already knows about many of your financial accounts, and the IRS can get information on how much is there. But, in reality, the IRS rarely digs deeper into your bank and financial accounts unless you're being audited or the IRS is collecting back taxes from you.
About 29% of respondents have between $501 and $5,000 in their savings accounts, while the remaining 21% of Americans have $5,001 or more. Few hold much cash in their checking accounts as well. Of those surveyed, 60% report having $500 or less in their checking accounts, while only about 12% have $2,001 or more.
A lack of money, trust, and privacy concerns are three main reasons why people in the U.S. are unbanked. Governments and other organizations have initiated several programs to “bank” the unbanked, such as the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.'s (FDIC's) Money Smart program.
When I interviewed my customers, however, I learned that for many lower income people, commercial banks are ultimately more expensive. The rapidly increasing cost of bounced check fees and late payment penalties has driven many customers away from banks, particularly those who live close to the edge.
Nearly one in four (22%) of U.S. adults have no emergency savings at all, Bankrate found—the second-lowest percentage in 13 years of polling. That's especially bad news given that most Americans would need at least six months of emergency savings to feel comfortable day-to-day.
According to the Federal Reserve's most recent Survey of Consumer Finances, the median savings account balance for all families was $8,000 in 2022. Savings account balances can vary greatly depending on income, age, education and race.
Being unbanked means things like cashing checks and paying bills are costly and time-consuming. Those who are unbanked often must rely on check cashing services to cash paychecks because they don't have direct deposit. They also have to pay bills using money orders, which adds time and expense to the process.
Break Big Bills
ATMs are usually only able to dispense bills in denominations of $20. Whether you need smaller bills for your business or just need change, you can bring your cash to any of our ITMs and exchange them for smaller bills.

Through right of offset, the government allows banks and credit unions to access the savings of their account holders under certain circ*mstances. This is allowed when the consumer misses a debt payment owed to that same financial institution.

As recently as 2019, 13.8 percent of Black households and 12.2 percent of Hispanic households did not have a checking or savings account at a bank or credit union, compared with only 2.5 percent of white households. Many Black and Hispanic people cited mistrust of banks as their reasoning.
